Career Panel: Finding A Job In Public Health

VtPHA is excited to present the third in our series of three public health career panels for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Our April panel will focus on how to find a career in public health. Our panelists include workforce development specialists from Vermont’s two largest health employers, a professor that helps students make the leap from the classroom to employment, and a recent graduate who will share her job search experience.

Noah Barclay-Derman, MPH, Lecturer, Global Health Minor Director for the Public Health Sciences Program, University of Vermont College of Nursing and Health Sciences (LinkedIn)

Noah Barclay-Derman holds his Master of Public Health degree from the Global Health Department at the University of Washington’s School of Public Health and an International Development Graduate Certificate from the Evans School of Public Affairs. Before joining the UVM faculty, Noah was the deputy director of Development in Gardening (DIG), overseeing programs at the intersection of agriculture and health in Senegal, Kenya and Uganda.  He has 15 years of experience working on global health issues in the public and private sectors both domestically and internationally. Noah’s areas of interest include food security and nutrition, sustainable development, and monitoring and evaluation. Noah is also a returned Peace Corps volunteer, for which he served communities impacted by HIV/AIDS in northeast Thailand.


Jae Basiliere, Ph.D, Public Health Workforce Director, Vermont Department of Health (LinkedIn)

Jae Basiliere, Ph.D. (they/them) joined the Vermont Department of Health in December 2023. As the Public Health Workforce Director, they are responsible for leading evidence-based and data-driven improvements to health department staff experience through a combination of professional development, culture work, policy development, relationship building, and staff advocacy.

In their previous life, Jae worked in higher education—first as a professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies for Grand Valley State University, then as the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Northern Vermont University, and finally as the Chief Diversity Officer for Vermont State University. Jae brings nearly two decades of experience with curriculum development, universal design, and systems advocacy to their current position.

Outside of work, Jae serves as the Vice Chair and Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Vermont Association of Mental Health and Addiction Recovery and is a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Governance Committee for the Vermont Asylum Assistance Project. They find joy in community, creation, nature, and games of all kinds.


Evelyn Gearty, David Rahr Community Philanthropy Program Assistant Fellow, Vermont Community Foundation (LinkedIn)

Evelyn Gearty graduated from the University of Vermont in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Shortly after graduation, she joined the Vermont Community Foundation as the Community Philanthropy Program Fellow. In this role, she works as part of the Grants and Community Impact team, supporting the Foundation’s grantmaking efforts with a focus on organizations that promote the health and well-being of Vermonters. She is excited to share her experience finding meaningful work in the field and how she approached the job search process post-college.


Michael Leyden, MPH, NRP, EMS Training Center Manager, University of Vermont Health Network (LinkedIn)

Mike Leyden has over 25 years of experience in emergency services and healthcare, encompassing direct patient care, public health, education, and healthcare administration. He is currently the EMS Training Center Manager for the UVM Health Network, where he has worked for eight years. Previously, he served as Emergency Management Director and Associate Vice President for Operations at Porter Medical Center. Mike also worked with Vermont’s Department of Health, overseeing State EMS Office operations and healthcare preparedness. While there, he launched the state’s public access naloxone program to prevent fatal opioid overdoses. His diverse background includes roles in emergency preparedness, EMS operations and education, wildland fire, and mountain search and rescue. A Nationally Registered Paramedic since 2004, Mike holds a Master of Public Health degree from Boston University. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor adventures with his family, mountain biking, backcountry skiing and guiding off-road motorcycle trips.
