WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
In an era of constantly changing drug trends, episodes of substance-induced psychosis are commonly seen in emergency department and crisis settings. Attempting to assist people is an increasingly complex task when considering impacts of the opioid crisis, synthetic drugs, poly-drug use, co-occurring mental health disorders and other health issue. This course will begin with an overview of substance-induced psychosis, and will clarify what differentiates psychosis in excess of hallucinations or delusions that typically are associated with simple substance withdrawal or intoxication. Symptoms of substance-induced psychosis will be reviewed, as well as strategies for identification. Initial treatment and management strategies will be discussed.
The training will spend some focused time on the differential diagnoses of substance induced psychotic disorder, psychotic disorder without substance involvement, and co-occurring disorders involving both psychosis and substance use. The ramifications of mis-diagnosis will also be discussed to include referral to the incorrect treatment setting and the impact on accurate use of medications in treatment.
Types of psychosis associated with various classes of legal and illegal substances will be examined, such as: the stimulants, the opioids, the sedative-hypnotics including alcohol, the hallucinogens, as well the latest designer drugs.
Considerations for special populations will be reviewed. Issues from more complex substance patterns such as mixing of multiple substances will be discussed, as well as additional considerations for co-occurring mental health or health conditions will be explored. The workshop will address brief motivational interviewing strategies proven to aid in referrals for post-acute planning.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to:
· Define substance-induced psychosis;
· Select two classes of drugs, and discuss the type of psychosis and issues for consideration for those two classes of drugs;
· Review treatment strategies for substance-induced psychosis;
· Utilize techniques from motivational interviewing strategies for referral and post-acute planning.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Emergency department personnel, emergency medical technicians, behavioral health clinicians, and other healthcare or social service staff interested in this topic.
IMPORTANT NOTE: People working in the Vermont system will receive priority admission to this workshop.
