Negative Impacts of High Potency THC on Community and Patient Safety: This is NOT Medicine
Tuesday, January 31 | 9:00am - 10:30am ET | Virtual
When Colorado legalized medical marijuana in 2000, the highest
THC potency was 5% in the plant and there were no concentrates.
Concentrates began to appear in 2010 and have increased THC potency,
some above 90% THC.
Because these products have been aggressively marketed as “medical”
(without any research to document safety or efficacy), people think they
are safe.
We have a significant increase in adolescents and young adults using
these products with negative consequences. High THC potency has also
significantly negatively impacted those in the criminal justice system.
Research on the medical benefits of marijuana have been based on THC
levels at less than 10%. What people are buying from medical and retail
dispensaries now is significantly higher in THC potency, and as a result,
consequences include cannabis use disorder, psychosis, depression, anxiety,
suicidal ideation and attempts, violence, cognitive impairment, and
cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.
