On April 29th, VtPHA hosted its Annual Meeting at Hula in Burlington, VT. What an evening! A full room of almost 100 attendees networked, engaged with student research posters, honored three Public Health Champions, and learned about combatting misinformation from a talent-stacked panel discussion.
VtPHA is evolving. We’ve spent the last year and a half building an organizational foundation that positions us for growth. Membership has almost tripled, our programs are firing on all cylinders, and energy around partnerships and new programs is building.
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us at Hula. For those who missed it, here are some event highlights.
Public Health Champion Awards
VtPHA’s Public Health Champion Award recognizes individuals and groups who have made extraordinary contributions to public health within the state. This award was created to acknowledge and appreciate the critical role that Vermonters, individually and collaboratively, play in protecting and promoting the best health for all Vermonters.
This year, we were excited to have three award recipients, one in the Individual category and two in the Group category. The awardees are:
- INDIVIDUAL: Kerry Batres for her work at AgeWell
- GROUP: THRIVE
- GROUP: Vermont Cultural Brokering Program

Panel Discussion – Advancing Public Health in the Age of Misinformation

It is no exaggeration to say that our communities are awash in misinformation. Fabricated, manipulated, misleading or just plain false, the volume of this deceptive content is distorting our ability to base decisions on a common, evidence-based foundation.
This phenomenon is especially troubling in the field of public health, where individuals’ decisions can have outsized impacts on the health and well-being of their community.
Annual Meeting attendees heard from a talented panel of information experts as the room listened, questioned, and engaged with a topic that is reaching the top of VtPHA’s concerns.
For those looking for the presenters’ slides, here you go:
