How Healthy Are Vermonters? It Depends On Where You Live.

This project and blog post were created by University of Vermont Public Health master’s degree candidate Chike Asanya.

Analyzing health outcomes at the county level in Vermont provides valuable insights into the geographic disparities of Vermonters’ well-being. To explore this topic further, let us look at two issues: life expectancy and smoking behavior.

According to the 2021 National Vital Statistics System, life expectancy in Vermont stands at approximately 78.8 years1 which is slightly higher than the national average of 77.5 years.2 However, there are notable variations in life expectancy among different counties within the state. For instance, Chittenden County, the largest county in Vermont with 25% of the state’s population,3 tends to have a higher life expectancy compared to other counties. Consider Chittenden County’s average of 81.3 years vs. Rutland County’s average of 76.9 years.4 Some factors contributing to Rutland County’s shorter life expectancy in comparison to Chittenden County include a higher rate of adult smoking: 17% to 12%, physical inactivity: 17% to 14%, unemployment: 3.3% to 2.1%, and greater rates of death due to injury: 118 to 75 (per 100,000 people).5

Health behaviors such as smoking can provide insights into the overall health status of different counties. Franklin county boasts the state’s highest percentage of adult cigarette smokers at 19%. This is significantly higher than the overall state average of 13%. Both tower over the rate of smokers in  Chittenden county at a mere 9%.5 It’s worth noting that the rate of smokers in Franklin county reporting their attempts to quit has decreased from 56% to 43% 6 In an interview with journalist Jean MacBride, Amy Brewer, coordinator of the Franklin Grand Isle Tobacco Prevention Coalition, says that, “Unless we help people try more, and support them in their quitting, we’re going to have a high adult use rate. It’s not gonna miraculously go down.” 7

Although Vermont has made tailored efforts to address smoking through resources like 802Quits, it’s clear that much more needs to be done. Not only with smoking behaviors, or disparities in life expectancy in each county. Any issue that impacts the health of Vermonters is nuanced and cannot be solved in a single day, or with a single solution. The analysis of health outcomes at the county level in Vermont underscores the complex interplay of various factors impacting overall well-being and healthcare disparities across different regions. While the state maintains a relatively high life expectancy compared to the national average, there exists significant variations among counties, with Chittenden County often exhibiting better outcomes than others.

Factors such as smoking behaviors shed light on these discrepancies, with counties like Rutland and Franklin facing higher rates of adult smoking compared to the state average. Efforts to address these challenges, exemplified by initiatives like 802Quits, are crucial but require ongoing dedication and multifaceted approaches. As Amy Brewer aptly emphasizes, the journey toward reducing smoking rates and improving overall health outcomes is a continuous one, necessitating comprehensive support systems and persistent efforts. By acknowledging and actively addressing these disparities, Vermont can strive toward a healthier, more equitable future for all its residents. Together, through collective action and unwavering commitment, we can pave the way for better health outcomes across the state, ensuring that every individual can thrive.
