The Future of Public Health

Students are the future of public health in Vermont. What do they need to succeed?

At VtPHA, we believe that on-the-job experience through internships is a key supplement to educational curriculum, exposing students to a wide diversity of public health career opportunities and connecting them with local communities.

Here’s a look at some of the students we’ve helped place in public health internships.

Lindsay Skinner (St. Michael’s College, ’24 Bachelor Public Health, Environmental Studies minor) worked with VtPHA researching wellness, drugs, and alcohol at a national and state level. Lindsay also served as an EMT on Saint Michael’s Fire and Rescue and as a Wellness Ambassador for Saint Mikes. Lindsay intends to use her field experience and internships to help her pursue a career in public health.
At VtPHA, Chike Asanya (MPH at UVM, ’24) researched crucial public health issues both locally and nationally, such as county-level health outcomes, homelessness, and access to reproductive healthcare. Chike also helped to compile a directory of organizations and individuals, that will help VtPHA to cultivate specialized affinity groups and foster meaningful policy engagement.
Julia Sarrasin (UVM MPH ’24) was drawn to intern at VtPHA because of our mission. In her words, “I have always been interested in advocating and connecting populations to quality of life improving resources, particularly in the context of global and one health. I am excited to intern at an organization that values the importance of providing Vermonters with the tools they need to sustainability promote the health of all Vermonters.”
VtPHA intern Taylor Foley (UVM ’24) graduated with a degree in Health Sciences and a minor in Health and Society. Her studies were fueled by a desire to “… contribute my skills and knowledge that I have acquired to create positive shifts in healthcare.” Her internship with VtPHA gave her hands-on experience with which to ground her academic learning.
Sierra Byrne (UVM ’24, Health Science) helped VtPHA research and develop resources focused on environmental health, specifically the connection between cyanobacteria and climate change. Sierra also worked at UVM Medical Cetner as a Radiology Medical Assistant.
Originally hailing from Hawaii, Tali Giubardo (UVM ‘24, Bachelor of Public Health and Nutrition minor) brought her passion for food and nutrition to her internship with VtPHA, investigating food insecurity in Vermont.

In addition to job experience, at VtPHA students can connect with peers at other public health programs across the state through our Student Section. Learn more about participation in a VtPHA Section.

Internships

To better connect students with job experience, VtPHA is working with our partners across the state to develop a public health internship database. Make sure you’re on our email list so you’ll hear updates about this ambitious new project.
