This semester, VtPHA is excited to host three University of Vermont seniors for their Public Health Sciences Capstone Project. The students will be helping VtPHA host Vermont-specific programming for the 30th anniversary of National Public Health Week (NPHW).
For those unfamiliar with NPHW, each April, the American Public Health Association (APHA) unites communities nationwide to celebrate NPHW, recognizing public health contributions and addressing key health issues. As the organizer for over 25 years, APHA develops annual campaigns and resources to educate the public, policymakers, and practitioners on each year’s theme. These materials promote public health awareness year-round.
NPHW’s 2025 themes are:
- It Starts Here: Your Health is Our Mission
- Climate Action Starts Here: Championing Resilience for Health
- Health Equity Starts Here: Optimizing Health for All
- Advocacy Starts Here: Amplifying Voices for Public Health
- The Future of Public Health Starts Here: Strengthening the Public Health Workforce
VtPHA, as a state-affiliate of APHA, helps to promote Vermont-specific education and advocacy around NPHW. (wow. that’s a lot of acronyms.)
For this project, our UVM team will:
- Develop Vermont-specific messaging and examples for each of NPHW’s 5 themes
- Help promote APHA and VtPHA webinars and activities planned for NPHW
- Connect with other public health students at peer Vermont educational institutions and plan and execute a day of policy education/advocacy at the Statehouse in Montpelier

And with that – meet the team!

Hi! My name is Yangdon Fenner, and I’m a senior at the University of Vermont, majoring in Health Sciences and completing my Master of Public Health through UVM’s accelerated MPH program. Growing up in Washington, DC, advocacy has always been a big part of my life—so much so that by sixth grade, I was already marching on Washington! These early experiences sparked my passion for public health and social justice. With a multicultural background, I’m especially drawn to global health. This past spring, I studied abroad in Nepal, my mother’s home country, where I had the opportunity to work with an NGO supporting displaced Himalayan communities. This experience strengthened my commitment to culturally responsive public health and to empowering underserved communities. I’m excited to bring this perspective to my work with VtPHA!

Hello! My name is Ella Kenney, and I am a senior at the University of Vermont, double majoring in Health Sciences and Spanish. Growing up in Vermont, I saw how healthcare access, community support, and systemic barriers shape well-being, which sparked my passion for public health. Since then, I have engaged in various research projects across the state, and I’m excited to work with the VtPHA to deepen my understanding of the challenges and efforts behind public health campaigns. This experience will strengthen my connection to public health in my home state before I continue my studies in New York City, where I will pursue an MPH in epidemiology to further explore population health and disease prevention.

Hi! My name is Ariana Lewis, and I’m a senior at UVM receiving my Bachelors in Public Health Science with a minor in Psychology. I grew up in the Northeast Kingdom in the small town of Lunenburg VT. Growing up in a rural area with a passion for healthcare and wellness, I relocated to Burlington to expand my knowledge of public health and gain a deeper understanding of the strategies and efforts involved in promoting community well-being. For the past few years, I’ve been dedicating my time to the UVM hospital where I have been working as a research assistant for a biospecimen protocol for one of the largest child brain development studies being run in the U.S. I’m incredibly excited to begin my work with VtPHA and dive deeper into the politics and efforts in developing effective public health campaigns! After I graduate from UVM, I plan to move to Boston to pursue my MPH and continue my work in research!
